PURPOSE:To provide a method for consistently producing high-quality silicon carbide fine particles in high operability without involving unreacted stock residues and/or formation of silicon carbide of abnormal morphology as a by- product. CONSTITUTION:A mixed stock comprising a silica source and carbonaceous material is heated in an inert atmosphere at 1300-2000 deg.C and converted into silicon carbide powder through reductive carbonization of the silica source. In this case, colloidal silica is used as the silica source, and carbon black having the following characteristics is used as the carbonaceous material: (1) carbon content: >=99wt.%, (2) sulfur content: <=0.2wt.%, (3) BET specific surface area: <=80m<2>/g and (4) DBP oil absorption: >=60ml/100g. The molar ratio C/SiO2 for the mixed stock is set at 1.6 to 2.2. |
