A compound is described that is useful as a dispersant for inorganic pigments and metallic flake pigments in waterborne coatings. The compound comprises a polymeric backbone having a pigment-interactive substituent and a stabilizing substituent. The pigment-interactive substituent has at least one functionality selected from the group consisting ofined herein. The stabilizing substituent includes the structure <IMAGE> wherein D1, D2, R1, R2, R3, m, and n are as defined herein.
