PURPOSE:To obtain a highly accurate picture area dividing device reduced in its calculation frequency as compared with a convensional device. CONSTITUTION:The area dividing device is constituted of plural histogram generators 32 to 34 for genereating histograms respectively corresponding to plural prescribed parameters in a picture, plural threshold calculators 35 to 37 for finding out the prescribed number of thresholds from respective generated histograms, a classifying unit 38 for classifying picture elements in the picture by the combination of the found thresholds for respective parameters, an inter- class level distance calculator 42 for finding out approximate values among respective classes based upon a previously determined condition, a comparator 43 for mutually comparing the found approximate values, a class integrator 44 for integrating two classes having the most approximation to one class, a number of classes calculator 45 for calculating the number of integrated classes, and a means for comparing the found number of classes with a previously determined objective division number and repeating the calculation for the number of picture elements and class integration when the number of classes exceeds the objective divided number. |
