The automatic shifting method of a carriage to the center point of a platen on opening the cover of an electronic typewriter, includes an initializing routine for finding a zero point by driving a carriage and a daisy-wheel motor after initializing the system once power is supplied, a detecting step if the cover is open, a carriage shifting routine for storing the present position of the carriage if the cover is opened with the detecting step and shifting the carriage to the center point of the platen, a retrieving routine of the previous position of the carriage for finding a zero point by driving the carriage and the daisy-wheel motor if the cover is closed, and a normal operating routine for performing an operation corresponding to the key-inputting by reading the key-input of keyboard after performing the carriage retrieving routine to previous position, thereby capable of easily exchanging a ribbon or a daisy-wheel.
