The latch (7) is inserted by a permanent automatic device (6) to prevent the tappet (2) from rising and allowing the valve (4) to close as the camshaft rotates. The device (7), acting only under command of a control system (11,12,13), can exert a greater force than that of the device (6) to withdraw the latch and allow the tappet to follow the cam and allow the valve to close. The valve gear is protected by an armoured casing (36), with a lock (37) controlling a latch (38) which engages in the rod (39) whose lower end face (45) rests in a seat (42). Unauthorised removal of the casing will cause the face of the rod or the seating to distort and prevent compression from taking place. Control of the inventional may be by manual, electro-hydraulic or smart card devices. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used to prevent unauthorised start-up of any internal combustion engine, with the advantage that the engine is mechanically disabled until required for use, and tampering with the valve gear is fruitless.
