The communication method between two switched telephone units involves exchanging matching signal streams. A fast equipment sends out the matching signal in half duplex. The second equipment, on recognition and validation of the validation segment, emits a second signal in the recognised mode. The first equipment analyses the second signal, and if it recognises the signal it stays in the accepted mode for reception and sets up the communication. If the second transmission mode is slower, the second equipment does not recognise the first mode. In this situation, the roles of the equipment are reversed, and the validation procedure occurs w.r.t. the previous sequence but in the second mode of transmission.
