PURPOSE:To provide an electric discharge lamp lighting device wherein a power loss in a circuit at starting time can be decreased and unevenness of an optical characteristic can be decreased to obtain illumination of high quality. CONSTITUTION:An electric discharge lamp La, changing an optical characteristic by changing lamp voltage, is controlled by a lighting circuit part 1 and controlled in a direction of increasing lamp power in accordance with the rise of lamp voltage by the first control mans 2. The electric discharge lamp is controlled in a direction of decreasing the lamp power in accordance with the rise of lamp voltage by the second control means 2, and the lamp voltage is compared with the predetermined voltage after lighting the electric discharge lamp La, to discriminate the lamp voltage by a lamp voltage discriminating means 100, so that a discrimination signal is received by switching means 101, 102 to switch a lighting condition of the electric discharge lamp La by switching the first/second control means 2 in accordance with the lamp voltage. In a constitution, the lamp is started by the first/second control means 2 of higher rated lamp voltage at starting time, to additionally provide a starting means 103 for switching the lamp to a predetermined lighting condition at stable lighting time. |
