The em radiation detector has a sensor element (6) contained in a housing (8) at the rear of a cover plate (11) which is transparent to the detected radiation. The sensor element provides an electrical signal corresponding to the incident radiation. A light source (16) is coupled to a radiation emitting element (12, 14) around the edge of the cover plate on the outside of the housing. The radiation is detected by the sensor element for detecting the level of soiling of the cover plate, for correction of the sensor element output signal. USE/ADVANTAGE - Monitoring spaces or industrial processes, flame detection. Allows cover plate soiling level to be measured during operation of radiation detector.
