A lighting system for vehicles involves changing the angle of the head lamp light beam when the car travels round a bend. The system comprises a sensor to measure the angular speed of the car while negotiating the curve, and another to measure the road speed. There is a unit to calculate a target position for the light beam angle using the sensor measurements and a controller to perform the required angle change. A further development is the calculation of road speed from the generation of pulses at preset distance intervals during the car journey, and the calculation of curve radius as a separate step from the angular speed and road speed measurements. ADVANTAGE- Gives full illumination when car negotiates curve.
