An imitation bait which consists of water which is gelatinised with from 5-20% by weight of gelatin and carrageenan, preferably from 2-7% by weight, with both percentages being based on the quantity of water, and preferably with the addition of flavourings, preservatives and dyes, effectively imitates natural bait and exhibits a combination of properties with regard to physical parameters, manageability and biological degradability which make it well-suited for its purpose.
