A piston top ring (4) is at a gap (9) allowing the ring to expand designed so that the gas in the combustion chamber of the cylinder is substantially prevented from flowing through the gap. The outer side (11) of the ring has at least two grooves (15) extending from the top side to the lower side of the ring in order to give a well-defined and controlled flow of hot gas from the working chamber to the underside of the ring. The grooves (15) delimit the pressure drop over the ring and thus the wear of the ring.
