The present invention relates to a process for making pull-tab lids from a metal sheet with a protective surface coating on one or both sides and a pull-tab. First embossed lines for a plurality of lids are made on a common metal sheet or strip, then a surface coating is applied to the embossed metal sheet or strip and finally the pull-tab is stamped out. In the process, the protective surface coating takes the form of a thermoplastic film laminated on the metal sheet or strip. The invention also relates to pull-tab lids produced by the process.
