(a) reacting a lower alkyl piperidine cpd. of formula (II) with an aliphatic di-alkyl ester of formula (III) in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a mixt. catalyst of aluminum alkoxide of formula Al-(OR5)3 and alkali metal; (b) adding water, refluxing it and filtering it to remove the residual catalyst; and (c) recovering the reaction product with a mixt. solvent of H2O and a lower aliphatic alcohol. In the formulas, R1=H, methyl, ethyl or propyl; R2 and R3 are each=methyl, ethyl or n-propyl; x=4-8; R4=methyl; R5=ethyl, propyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl or sec-butyl.
