The combination instrument (1) has a primary tachometer display (2,3) which is permanently visible and a secondary display which is only visible when required e.g. for inspection indication or on-board computer. The permanently visible display is displaced from its signal position within the display field via a setting motor (8). The secondary display has a display field which is partially overlapped by the permanently visible display in the original position of the latter. Pref. the setting motor is coupled to two display elements of the primary display via a rack and pinion device allowing them to be displaced in opposite directions. ADVANTAGE - Optimum use of dashboard display surface.
