A special ladder with a tapering top section and grips for the trunk is positioned onto the tree. The operator climbs to the top and secures the abseil line (4), with the ladder secured by a short line. By lowering himself in controlled stages the operator is able to a hand cut the branches, with all the branches reached by pulling himself around the trunk. If the abseil line is secured with a karabiner (2,3) to clamp around the trunk through the weight on the abseil line the line can be removed when the operator reaches the ground simply by pushing the ladder back onto the trunk and letting the line slide down the trunk.
