A pneumatically-driven device pushes or pulls pipes through the ground, or splits them apart. The forward thrust, air pressure, pore water pressure and their fluctuations are measured, recorded and evaluated as the device moves. The air pressure is measured at an inlet pipe. The pore water pressure is measured from an ancillary passage at the front end. The resulting data may be used to predict and monitor other dynamic penetration stages. Fluctuations reveal the progress made, indirect, elastic and viscous portions of the resistance to penetration. This allows determination of the density and consistency of the soil. USE/ADVANTAGE - Information recorded enables deduction of soil characteristics.
