A method for separating PVC chips from PET chips is disclosed along with a PVC chip composition (20). A mixture of PVC and PET chips (401) is contacted with a surface conditioning agent (420) to produce relatively hydrophobic polyvinyl chloride chips. The conditioned mixture is subsequently subjected to an air flotation step (440) to float off the hydrophobic PVC chips (442) and to recover the PET (443) from the aqueous medium.
