The battery replacement system has a replacement station at which the batteries are recharged via a charging device (3) which monitors the recharging process to allow a drained battery to be replaced by a fully charged battery (11). Each battery reception point (5..10) at the replacement station has switch contacts coupling the battery to the charging device which measures the battery charge to control full recharging, each recharged battery only released upon entry of a valid user code via an input/output device (4). ADVANTAGE - Allows operating range of electrically driven vehicle to be extended.
