The video monitoring system has at least one video camera coupled to a transmission device (2) for processing the video images and transmitting them to a reception device (10), coupled to a video monitor (14). The image repetition rate of the video images provided by the transmission device is adjusted in dependence on the required image quality so that a higher repetition rate is used for poor quality images and a lower repetition rate for higher quality images. Pref. an initial image of required quality is transmitted, followed by the difference content for successive images, combined with the prior image data held in a memory at the reception side. USE/ADVANTAGE - For intruder surveillance. Allows repetition rate to be increased if required.
