A power cell (30) which converts ionizing radiation (14) into electrical energy. The power cell includes a multi-layer composite source element (60) which includes a charged particle emitter layer (63), first and second source dielectric layers (62), a source collector layer (61) and a source retarding layer (65). The source element is disposed within a multi-layer composite shield element (70) having an absorber (73), first and second shield dielectric layers (72), a shield collector layer (71), and a shield retarding layer (75). An anode (A) is connected to the emitter layer (63) and a cathode (C) to the collector layer (61). The emitter layer (63) produces charged particles which interact with the dielectric layers (12 and 64) to eject electrons which are collected by the collector layer (61) to generate a potential between the anode (A) and the cathode (C). |
