The device according to the invention comprises a bar loader (7) in which the bar (10) to be machined is pushed by a pushrod (8) driven by a motor (15) controlled by electronic control means. The motor (15) is associated with an angular position sensor (17) to measure the rotation of the said motor and produce signals about the angular position measurement. The device further comprises an optical sensor for detecting the presence of the end of the bar (20), this sensor being positioned upstream of the machine, and producing a signal that it has detected the passage of the end of the bar. During the initial advance of the bar (10), the passage of its anterior end is detected, and the movement of the bar is then measured by means of the angular position sensor (17).
