Carbonic acid diesters which contain at least one aromatic ester group can be prepared from carbonic acid diesters which contain at least one aliphatic ester group by transesterification with a phenol, the catalyst employed being a titanium dioxide with a BET surface area of at least 20 m<2>/g.
