An improved write buffer system is disclosed. The write buffer has the capability of gathering to any rank within the buffer. The write buffer includes address storage locations, which are matched when a new write is written to the write buffer. If match occurs, the system determines whether the new byte information may be gathered to the matching address location. In a conflict in write information exists, the address and byte information is gathered to a new rank. Once a rank is full, the buffer attempts to write the data information from the write buffer to a memory system. The write buffer increases system performance by allowing a CPU to write to the write buffer nearly instantaneously, without the delay for the slower memory system to absorb the write. While the CPU is engaged in performing other tasks, the write buffer outputs the write information to the memory unit or to other system devices needing address data information. |
