At this time, in addition to an adaptive coefficient K which has been computed by a computing means M1 in accordance with a running condition of the vehicle, computing means M2, M3 compute a lower limit value TNemin, and a high limit value TNemax of the desired engine rotational speed TNe, respectively, from the vehicle speed V and an engine load thetaTH If the desired engine rotational speed TNe deviates from the lower limit value TNemin, or the upper limit value TNemax, the control means M6 controls the gear ratio of the continuously variable transmission C with the use of the upper and lower limit values TNemin, TNemax as a desired value.
