PURPOSE: To provide a bookbinding device for forming notches in the direction almost crossing a side edge or a folding line edge on the back of a clamped block by a cutting tool and an opposite holder supporting the front of the block in resistance to cutting force from a side face and provided above the tool. CONSTITUTION: An opposite holder 8 used for the front of a block is formed above a channel 10 of a guide 11 retracted under a cylindrical supporting face 9 working as a rotatable cylindrical supporting face 9 and encircling the movement track of a notching tool 5. A base paper passing through the back of the block and the opposite holder is not damaged and the wear of the opposite holder can be controlled to a large extent and processing can be carried out without lowering the quality of the block by the arrangement.
