发明名称 Improvements in or relating to automatic tap holder drive mechanisms
摘要 825,427. Tapping; mounting chucks. THOKA MACHINERY SUPPLIES Ltd. Oct. 9, 1957 [Oct. 17, 1956], No. 31641/56. Class 83 (3). A tapping or threading drive-mechanism comprises a housing 1 connectable to the feedmember of a machine, means 2 for connection to the rotary spindle of the machine to rotate a tap-holder spindle 6 in reverse directions, and snap-action means for reversing the drive. The drive gear 2 rotates the spindle 6 forwardly through a gear 3, a gear 5, clutch-pins 7, clutchteeth 8, and a gear 4, as in the lower half of Fig. 1. The reverse drive is through planetgears 9 on fixed spindles 18 and a gear 10 clutched to the spindle by teeth 8<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>1</SP>. The spindle 6 is connected to drive the chuck 11 through balls 12 running in grooves, of a length greater than the thread-length to be cut. Tension and compression springs 15, 16 hold the chuck in a position of equilibrium slightly in advance of that shown at the bottom of Fig. 1. A cover 19 prevents the ingress of dirt. In operation, the housing 1 is traversed at a rapid rate until the tap has engaged the work and the spring 15 is compressed as shown in the lower half of Fig. 1. The traverse then proceeds at a slow rate. The tap, moving forwardly, tensions the spring 16 until the force is sufficient to pull the spindle forwardly, causing a cam-member 8a to force balls 25 outwardly against a spring 26. The clutch 7, 8 is thereby released and the clutch 8<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>1</SP> engaged, causing the tap to rotate at a greatly increased speed in the reverse direction. The clutches are again reversed when the spring 15 is sufficiently compressed. The tap then advances. The reciprocating movements of the tap continue while the housing 1 is fed steadily forwards until a disc 27 strikes a limit switch and causes a rapid-return movement of the housing 1. A further limit switch is operated to stop the rapid-return within the limit of movement of the balls 12. When the tap is free of the work, a time-relay operates to re-start the rapidreturn movement. The tap may be mounted on a head carrying a drill for the next hole to be tapped, the feed-movements for the drill and tap being the same. It is stated that the sudden reversal results in re-cutting commencing against a partially cut chip, instead of the peak of the tap-thread having to start a new cut. In a modification, the spring 15 is omitted. In a further modification, to ensure that the initial cut is not of too great a length so that over-heating occurs, an additional compression spring is provided, which augments the pull of the tension spring 16. After the initial reversal, the additional compression spring is rendered ineffective. Mounting chucks.-In a final modification, the spindle is pressed rearwardly by a spring 41, Fig. 3, and the chuck incorporates a centralizing spring 52, Fig. 4, the springs 41, 52 acting in a way similar to that of the springs 15, 16 in Fig. 1.
