The invention concerns the use, in surfactant-containing washing and cleaning agents, of suitable anti-foaming systems containing hydrophobic silicic acid and/or a bis-amide derived from diamines and carboxylic acids. The aim of the invention is to improve the ability of such systems to be converted into free-running silicon-free foam-control agents and also to improve their effectiveness over a wide temperature range, while ensuring that both the anti-foaming system and the foam-control agent containing it remain stable during storage and retain their action when mixed with the other usual ingredients of washing agents, and do not have any detrimental effects on the materials to be washed or on the environment. This is achieved essentially by using an anti-foaming system containing 0,1 to 30 % by wt. of hydrophobic silicic acid and/or at least one bis-amide derived from a C2-7 diamine and a saturated C12-22 carboxylic acid, 20 to 99.9 % by wt. of at least one alcohol with 12 to 24 C-atoms, up to 79.9 % by wt. of at least one ester of a C12-22 carboxylic acid and a C1-40 alcohol and up to 79.9 % by wt. of a paraffin wax or a paraffin-wax mixture with a solidification point not lower than 25 DEG C.
