PURPOSE:The N-containing ring in isoquinoline is selectively hydrogenated using a Ph-CO catalyst in the presence of carbon monoxide and water to pro duce 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-isoquinoline which is used as an intermediate of medicines and agrochemicals readily in high yield. CONSTITUTION:An isoquinoline of the formula (R1, R2 are H, alkyl, alokoxy, benzyloxy, R3 is H, alkyl) is subjected to selective reduction of the n-containing ring in the presence of carbon monoxide and water, using a Rh-CO catalyst to give the objective 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline. The catalyst is represented by Rhn(CO)m, typically Rh6(CO)16 and the amount is preferably 0.005-0.05 time the molar amount of the isoquinoline. The amount of water is 2 equivalents to the starting material or may be largely excessive to function as a solvent. The reaction temperature is 100-200 deg.C. |
