The echo canceller (1) receives data x(i) which are likely to generate an echo r(i) and data y(i) + r(i) distorted by the echo. An echo synthesizer (50) is provided to form a replica r'(i) of the echo r(i) on the basis of a series of data which are delayed by delay elements 701...70N, weighted by weighting coefficients ck in which k = 1,...,N. A calculating element (85) determines the coefficients ck: ck(i+1) = ck(i) + d.ck(i).sign[x(i-k).e(i)] in which d < 1. Application: information transmissions.
