Porcelain (I) contg. phosphate (II), which is fired at low temp. and has high transparency and strength, consists of mullite (III), glass phase (IV) quartz grains (V) and pores. (IV) contains (II), whilst (V) are present mainly as unreacted constituent in the matrix. Pref. (II) content is 3.5-6.0 (wt.)% and (II) pref. is Ca3(PO4)2 (IIA). The matrix contains 18-30% (V) and also anorthite. (III) is prim. mullite. The unreacted (V) have particle size distribution 88-100% under 40.0 microns, 55-86% under 20.0 microns, 30-55% under 10.0 microns, 18-30% under 5.0 microns, 8-15% under 2.5 microns, 3-9% under 1.0 micron and 1-6% under 0.5 micron. (I) contains less than 0.4% Fe2O3 + TiO2. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is esp. suitable for crockery. (I) has a flexural strength of 80-100 N/mm2 (claimed). It has the properties of a hard porcelain fired at 1400 deg.C e.g. transparency, flexural strength, impact strength, hardness, freedom from heavy metals and resistance to acid, dish washers and microwave ovens. It can be produced economically using relatively simple technology, normal firing aggregates and variable firing conditions. The firing temp. is relatively low, which saves energy and increases the life of the equipment, and little distortion occurs during firing.
