The invention relates to a stacker/destacker for depalletizing and destacking crates in the open air or in greenhouses, with which 2 rows of stacks are destacked simultaneously and 2 rows of crates are placed flat on the ground. During stacking, work takes place in the reverse order. In order to be able to successfully take hold of crates which have been palletized by hand for destacking purposes, there is a platform on which a pallet can be placed, which pallet holds a double row of stacks. The mobile stacker/destacker is able to divide these 2 rows of stacks by introducing bevelled plates. When picking up the crates again from the ground, use is made of an insertion jig which centres the crates with respect to the tubular rail along which the stacker/destacker moves, and the crates are positioned in the direction of travel by means of a pusher. As a result of 3 plates being provided, the stacks remain in a good vertical position during destacking, even if the base is relatively insecure. An insecure base when stacking is compensated for by the fact that the fingers with which the crates are gripped allow considerable inaccuracy in the vertical direction. To achieve the possibility of adjusting the position of the crates with respect to the tubular rail, the inner frame can move with respect to the outer frame.
