The camshaft (10) is turned w.r.t. its drive wheel (11). The adjusting member (39) is engageable by a variable pressure of a pump (43, 47-49) via a control valve (90), and is linked to a longitudinally shiftable coupler (23) coacting with the drive wheel, via gear pairs (26, 27) and with the camshaft. At least one gear pair is of helical type. The adjusting member is a simple-acting cylinder, whose pressure chamber (42, 59) is continuously coupled to the pump. The total lead rate of the gear pairs is below 200 mm per revolution. ADVANTAGE - Simple and compact design.
