The forward drive unit connected to the inspection head comprises several rigid advance elements each having at one end a ball head and at the other end a socket ring. These advance elements have wheels fixed on wheel swing bars mounted to swivel on the advance elements. The swing bars are connected by an eccentric to a locking/unlocking mechanism for the ring/ball head connecting between two adjoining elements. The wheels (3) are swivelled by a slide track unit incorporated in the guide-pulley device which is provided at the foot end of the insert pole. The ball heads projecting out of the advance elements can have several ribs on their ball face facing the adjoining element. The recessed ring facing the ball head matches the ball face and has several complementary grooves matching the ribs. USE/ADVANTAGE - The pipeline inspection device is sufficiently rigid when moving through straight sections but is sufficiently flexible when negotiating narrow curves.
