A process for treatment of the liquid effluent from the leather and tanning industries. It is characterized in that (i) a prior analysis must be made of the effluent; (ii) the cationic interchange capacity of the soil must be determined; (iii) the duration of the periods of flow and drying must be 15-30 days; (iv) there must be abundant organic matter in the first 40 centimetres of the soil; (v) the soils and effluents must be basic and the conditions aerobic; (vi) the soils must be clayey; (vii) the land must be analysed after each period of drying.
