The invention relates to a method for the preservation of wood by the removal of loose material, such as insects, larvae, bore dust and rotten wood from wood affected by insects and/or fungi, with the wood being caused to vibrate. Because of the vibration, part of the loose material present in the affected wood leaves the wood via exit apertures, boreholes, cracks and other openings. The interior of the wood is thus more readily accessible to pesticides, synthetic resins, etc. The aforesaid method can be combined with the boring of holes into the wood before causing it to vibrate, as a result of which the method according to the invention becomes more effective because there are more openings through which the loose material can leave the wood.
