The data reading device reads data from objects (1), e.g. vehicles, moving in a defined zone (2). The vehicles include an arrangement which, after activation, allow a transaction and transmit signals to a fixed station (4) in the reading device. The arrangement on the vehicle can be activated in two different states. A predetermined signal is transmitted at the beginning or the end of the defined zone, and the arrangement on the vehicle is activated in a first state when it receives the predetermined signal. The arrangement is switched to a second state when the transaction occurs. The arrangement is on the vehicle windscreen and includes a transmitter, receiver, and a processor. The defined zone is, e.g. a stretch of road. The transceiver is activated by a microwave signal from an antenna (3) at the front edge of the defined zone. ADVANTAGE - One-step process, prevents erroneous double toll payment.
