The present invention is directed to imidazo[1,5-a][1,4]benzodiazepine-3-carboxamide compounds of the formula: <IMAGE> I wherein R is hydrogen, C3CH2-, CH2=CHCH2-, (CH3)2CH-, CH3CH2CH2-, or <IMAGE> or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. These compounds and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts possess anti-anxiety and anti-epileptic activity.
