A latch mechanism (34) for latching a convertible top header (24) to a vehicle windshield header (18) comprises a latch hook receiver (124) mounted adjacent to each end of the windshield header (18) and a pair of movable latch members (104) each having a free end mounting a hook (108). A mounting bracket (76) located adjacent to each end of the top header (24) has an elongated base slot (96, 98) and an intersecting curvilinear branch slot (100, 102) adjacent to its outer end. A guide pin (120) and a spaced drive pin (114), carried by each latch member (104), are received within the respective slots (96, 98) and (100, 102) in the unlatched position. A drive link (66), electrically driven or hand-operated, is connected to each latch member drive pin (114). Operation of the drive link (66) pivots the latch members (104) about the guide pins (120) until the drive pins (114) enter the base slots (96, 98) and terminally slide both pins (114, 120) toward the inner ends of the base slots (96, 98) to move the latch members (104) from unlatched to latched positions. This moves each hook through a compound curvilinear path (X, Y) between an unlatched position stored within the top header (24), and a latched position, extending from the top header (24). |
