A magnetic tape cassette recorder with a front loading facility has a loading mechanism that consists of a motor (11) with a worm (13) and pinion (12) transmission to a gear train (8,9). The output gear in the train meshes with a cam gear (6) that has an arm (5) with a slot (7) in which there is a pin (5). The pin projects from the side walls of a cassette holder. When the cassette(s) is inserted a switch triggers the motor and the cassette is loaded. If the cassette is incorrectly loaded the motor is not activated but the gears can rotate in idling mode to allow the cassette to push in without causing damage. ADVANTAGE - Avoids damage through incorrect cassette loading.
