High-mol. wt. copolymers of propylene@] with vinyl] or acrylate] ester(s)] - by radical-initiated soln., suspension or emulsion polymerisation, with a constant propylene@]:comonomer mole ratio of up to 2:1

Prepn. of copolymers (I) of propylene (P) and vinyl or acrylate esters (ester), with P content 1-50 mole-% and mol. wt. at least 50,000 is claimed. The process comprises radical-initiated copolymerisation of (a) 1-50 mole-% P (b) 50-99 mole-% ester and (c) 0-15 mole-% other unsatd. comonomers at up to 75 deg.C in soln., suspension or emulsion, components (b) and (c) being added to the mixt. so that the mole ratio (a):(b+c) is up to 2:1 in the polymerisation phase, with this mole ratio being maintained during polymerisation, at least up to a conversion of 70%. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in the form of dispersions as coating materials, adhesives or binders in the textile, paper and building industries; copolymers prepd. in soln. are useful as lacquers and adhesives; propylene/vinyl ester copolymers are also useful for prodn. of the corresp. propylene/vinyl alcohol copolymers (claimed). The process enables the prodn. of P/ester copolymers of mol. wt. much higher than 100,000 contg. more than 20 mole % P, with high yields and short reaction times.
