It is proposed that as the crosshead is raised from the material to be cut, a predefined distance (Z) between the crosshead and the material be recorded and the lifting movement of the crosshead be terminated when the predefined distance is recorded or some time after the predefined distance is recorded. In the case of a device for optimising the idle stroke of the crosshead, a sensor is provided which is arranged on the crosshead and the effective surface (8b) of which comes into contact with the material to be cut below the crosshead and outside it. According to a further device, provision is made for a plurality of sensors to be arranged in the machine frame which record the position of the crosshead and the level at which the material to be cut is inserted.
