A safety switch has a main element in the form of an extruded elastomer with an oval tube profile (2). This can be fitted around a door frame or similar installation. Within the hollow section are electrical conductors (4,5) made of carbon fibres that are extruded along with the main section. The conductors form contact surfaces that are engaged when an external force is applied to the tube. A number of alternatives are possible for the form of the carbon fibre collection.
