A machine for grinding up material comprises a housing (10) forming a working area (11) with an inlet (14) and an outlet (13) for the ground material. Within the housing (10) is a rotating, driven wheel (21) on which freely rotating cutters (22) are mounted. A cutting gap is formed between the cutting edges (22a) and a fixed shear element (41) attached to the housing (10). The circular cutters (22) are funnel-shaped. Shearing tools (41) are either strips or plates or a fixed knife opposite the circular cutter (22) with a dia. similar to that of the circular cutter (22). A further variation of the shearing tool (41) is formed by the front face of the material feed tube. The knife cutting edge (20) has a wear resistant tip (23) and at least part of the cutting chamber (11) has a wear resistant insert. A pref. rotating wheel (21) has inclined material guiding surfaces at the side between the circular cutters (22). USE/ADVANTAGE - Prodn. of agricultural feedstock and for grinding up industrial and agricultural waste material. Simple construction capable of handling a variety of materials including fibres without wedging of material or fracture of cutters.
