A method of growing a seedling involves allowing the seeds to germinate until the appearance of 2-3 leaves, the apical bud and the stem, then lowering the soil holder with nutrient layer and seedling within the soil box until the lowest leaf-shoot is on a level with the upper edge of the box and applying a further nutrient soil layer on top, and covering the lower part of the stalk, ensuring that the surface of the additional nutrient layer is on a level with the upper edge of the soil box wall. The seedling is allowed to grow until the appearance of dark green foliage and stalk and fibrous roots. The soil holder is then removed from the box and the seedling is replanted with or without its own soil in a permanent site in an open bed. The device for germinating the seedling comprises a box (1) in the shape of a tube within which is accommodated a soil holder (3) which can be moved up and down.
