Proposed is a procedure for testing a generator (10) or a motor which can be operated as a generator. In this procedure, the pulse length (Ti) of the pulsed d.c. output from the generator or the voltage (U) is determined from a signal produced from the generator (11) or from a load (12). Monitoring of the pulse length (Ti) makes it possible not only to identify major faults but also to check winding, rectifier and pole-angle tolerances, for instance. Where the generator (11) under test is designed as the power supply in a motor vehicle, the signal (U) can be tapped from the vehicle's electrical circuit, e.g. from the cigarette lighter.
