The use of brown coal powder or dust (I) as a filler in carpet backing coatings is claimed. Also claimed is a carpet backing material (II), contg. (I) as filler, together with other conventional, non-filler components such as polymers, thickeners, vulcanising agents, dispersants etc. ADVANTAGE - The use of (I) in carpet backing facilities the disposal of old carpets by incineration, compared with prior-art inorganic fillers such as chalk, Al oxide etc. which leave incombustible residues for which special dumping arrangements may be required, resulting in higher costs. Carpet backings contg. (I) also have excellent antistatic properties.
