The invention relates to a polygonal cutting insert (10, 19) with raised chip shaping components (18) on the face (12) which are arranged side-by-side in a row at a distance from the cutting edge (13, 20) and which extend longitudinally with a longitudinal axis thereby defined which forms an angle to the perpendicular to the cutting edge in the face plane. To guide the chips better and to ensure reliable material removal with the lightest possible load on the cutting insert, it is proposed that the raised chip shaping components (18) take the form of longitudinal ribs and be directed substantially in the direction of the chip flow. The crest of the rib arch is at a minimum (182, 184) when viewed along the side or along the side longitudinal cross section and a maximum (183) in a region further from the cutting edge or has the same height as a central face plateau raised above the cuttine edges (13, 22) or corners.
