The apparatus and method is for tracking a tape automatically at double speed mode by detecting envelope curve of reproduced video signal. The circuit includes an envelope curve detector (4) for detecting envelope curve of reproduced video signal, a sample and hold circuit (5) for sampling the envelope curve two times during a head switching period, an A/D converter (6) for converting output signal of the sample and hold circuit, and a controller (7) for generating servo control signal according to the detected envelope curve.
