Apparatus for sampling coal &c. as it falls in a stream A1-A2 from a conveyer 4 comprises a sampling scoop 1 mounted between the ends of two arms 13 which, at their other ends, are each pivoted by a pin 18 to a pair of parallel plates 15 in which are journalled shafts 17 and 19 carrying, respectively, pairs of flanged rollers 10 and 12 supported between upper and lower rails 21. The upper rails have upwardly bent branches 23. The rails form part of an enclosure 8, each side-wall of which is provided with a slot 14 accommodating a collar 16 provided on each pin 18. Each slot has a ramped portion 20. A pair of hydraulic rams 27 are mounted on the end of the enclosure 8 and each ram-rod 25 thereof is pivoted to a shaft 19. The rate and direction of travel of the ram-rods is controlled by valves in a hydraulic circuit, e.g. operated by switches. When the ramrods are moved out of the rams, the rollers 12 are moved downwardly between the rails 21 and the collars 16 are moved in a similar direction along their slots then down the ramped portions 20, thus causing the plates 15 to swing about the shaft 19, the rollers 10 to move upwardly between the rail branches 23 and the arms and scoop to move, from an upper discharging position 29, downwardly and parallel to the rails and then swing clockwise through the stream of coal &c. to catch a sample. These movements are reversed on the return stroke of the ramrods. The scoop has an open mouth 39 and a hinged door 11, which is held closed by a releasable catch 3. When the scoop is returned to its discharging position 29, the catch 3 is relased, the door 11 swings open and the sample is discharged into a shoot 35 provided with a gap 33 through which the scoop passes. Contact with the edge of the gap closes the door 11 as the scoop moves from its charging position. The shoot 35 may deliver the sample to a crusher and a secondary sampler described in Specification 786,887.
