摘要 The invention relates to a process and an appliance, such as a loop reactor 1, for continuously culturing micro- organisms in association with a high rate of use of gaseous substrates, in which process one or more gases is/are introduced into, and admixed with, a fermentation liquid which is introduced into a loop reactor 1 which has a top part 4, a downstream part 2 and an upstream part 3, which three parts 2, 3, 4 are included in a circuit for the fermentation liquid, which is circulated in the loop reactor 1 by a pump. According to the invention, the loop reactor 1 is designed with a tube loop 16 which connects the lower ends 8, 9 of the downstream part 2 and the upstream part 3, respectively, to each other in order to form a closed circuit, which tube loop 16 extends in the main horizontally outwards in the direction away from the plane which is defined by the vertical downstream part 2 together with the likewise vertical upstream part 3. At the hydrostatic pressure which is exerted by the fermentation liquid in the vertical tubes 2, 3, the gas bubbles 18 have a long dwell time in the fermentation liquid, thereby generating a high mass transport in the loop reactor 1. <IMAGE>
